Seventh Generation Giveaway

When it comes to cleaning, I find that Seventh Generation gets the job done! Not only that but without the harmful toxic chemicals. Seventh Generation is eco-friendly and safe for the evironment.

Seventh Generation has partnered with eco-lifestyle consultant and author, Alexandra Zissu, whose new book, The Conscious Kitchen, discusses what’s good for your health, what’s good for the planet and what tastes great. Her book also includes great tips on maintaining a green and healthy kitchen, including:

Change is Good
Choosing cleaning products without indoor air pollutants like volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, is a simple and effective way to reduce your indoor air pollution. If you’re not prepared to switch everything overnight, start by swapping out the one product you use the most, and moving forward from there.

Think before you spray
Residues from cleaning products can last on a surface for longer than we we’d like to know and travel to areas that we sometimes don’t intend them to. Don’t contaminate your food by prepping it on a surface that may contain harsh chemical residues - rinse cleaning products from food preparation surfaces carefully or use botanical disinfecting cleaners that do not require a rinse step.

Home is Where the Clean Is
Your standard cleaners are good for removing soils and dirt from kitchen surfaces, but to tackle germs you need a cleaner that is effective against microbes like bacteria and viruses. Many cleaners contain ingredients that have antimicrobial properties such as vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, but the germ killing power of these is not necessarily guaranteed. To be sure you are killing germs, use an EPA registered disinfectant. Seventh Generation tapped into the disinfecting power of the common garden herb thyme, to provide a disinfecting cleaner that kills germs* naturally.

Make the Old New Again
Think twice about the items that you’re using to clean and dry your kitchen equipment and dishes. Use rags (like old t-shirts and washcloths) instead of paper towels. If you aren’t prepared to kick your paper towel addiction just yet, use only recycled versions that are unbleached or haven’t been whitened with chemicals containing chlorine and see how long you can make a roll last.

The Writing is on the … Sponge
Be sure to read the fine print on sponges and only purchase those that do not contain antimicrobial pesticides. Remember to store sponges in a dry place and frequently clean them by popping plastic sponges wet in a microwave for two minutes or boiling sponges for three minutes in water.

Mom Was Right, Wash Your Hands
Wash your hands with soap and water before and after prepping food, and always before eating. So much of what can be potentially harmful in a kitchen can be reduced by this simple act that doesn’t require any harsh chemicals whatsoever.

I just rec'd a gift pack and information made possible from Seventh Generation through MyBlogSpark.

I have begun to use these products and find them very good. Especially since I have a mother with a neurological disease it is very important that I keep as many chemicals out of her environment as possible.

It was really hard, but I have given up using plastic water bottles. It's almost second nature now to grab a pre filled reusable aluminum water bottle from the fridge. I don't know why I resisted it so much when there are so many prettier and healthier alternatives to plastic!

I have switched over to use baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar for my cleaning because we have kids with allergies in our home. I'd like to try Seventh generation if they are really hypo-allergenic.

We try our best to avoid chemicals in personal products! The best thing I've done for the environment this year is planting trees at a local park.

I've banished all of the old chemical laden cleaners that I used to use from my home, and for the past 2 years, have cleaned only the "natural" way. I use a lot of white vinegar in my cleaning, as well as baking soda. The house smells so fresh and natural!

We have started making the transition to more family friendly cleaners but the ones we have are so expensive we haven't made the complete switch yet but we are trying!

We have also eliminated all paper towel use in our household, using bar towels that get washed and reused instead. We also use a water filter and BPA free canteens rather than buy water bottles!

I have started the change. I also as someone before me mention have moved on to the simple cleaners that we have long forgot about. I have a book titled SHAMELESS SHORTCUTS. It seems that baking soda, borax, lemon juice, and vinegar work better than the expensive products.

if i have items to get rid of i either give stuff to goodwill or shelters, or bring them to recycling facilities instead of dumping them in the trash.

We are switching over to green cleaning products and have a few Seventh Generation products in use. We also have stopped getting plastic water bottles and use more glass and stainless steel containers not just for beverages, but also for storing leftovers and carrying lunches to work. We hardly ever drive anymore - prefer alternative transportation except for trips to the grocery store. We eat a lot more organic foods, much of which we have been growing at home.

I try and find alternative ways to clean something vs. just buying a bottle of this or that at the store. Water works wonders on a lot of things. AND vinegar is a good backup. ;)

Thanks for the giveaway...we use various combinations of baking soda, lemon, and vinegar to clean the various surfaces in our home for the most part; a mild bleach solution also has it's uses, however infrequently.

Our latest green initiative this year was to "retire" our dishwasher to save energy i.e. hot water/electricity...we use elbow grease to wash the dishes now (and in the summer we use the "grey water" to water our plants).
